Some of them were really very strange. These questions were actually myths that can halt the students from IELTS preparation. I am going to discuss some of these myths here and replace them with the suitable fact.

Myth No. 1: Non-native speakers cannot pull 9 bands

Truth: This is not truth that only native speakers can gain 9 bands in IELTS. This test is based on English so it doesn’t matter from where you belong to. The examiner tests your English level and if you have powerful English skills then no one can cut your marks. Band 9 in IELTS depicts an expert user of English. It is very easy and quite possible for non-native speakers to score 9 bands in IELTS if they perform excellently. Instead, it has been observed that some native speakers do not get 9 bands even in speaking.

Myth No. 2: Practice previous tests to improve your performance

Truth: This is very common myth among the students who prepare for IELTS. The best way to improve your performance is not practicing old tests, rather make you perfect in all 4 modules by using different ways. Get familiar with the test once and after this you can work on your weakness. Doing tests does not really benefit you. If you do these tests you may feel that you are enough prepared for the final test, but in final you may not perform up to the mark. These tests fill your brain with their answers but the questions you will face in your real test will be totally different. Prefer listening English news, radio, conversations between 2 English speakers, English songs, movies etc.

Myth No. 3: Learn more and more vocabulary

Truth: We are well aware that when it comes to speak or write in English, the vocabulary is of great help but it doesn’t mean that you start cramming the words. People start searching How to Improve English Vocabulary for IELTS? This practice is just required to make your communication better. But if you could not even use them properly then it is of no use so read out the words you face regularly, on routine basis. If you do not understand any word, read out its meaning, start using it and make it your own word. Learn quality words rather than learning a long list of words. This would surely help you to grab more marks. You may find the words that are commonly used in IELTS.

Myth No. 4: IELTS Test is difficult for overseas students to get admission into top universities

Truth: IELTS is an independent test and it has nothing to do with different universities. It just checks the English level of the candidate who wish to move abroad for any purpose. Universities have set their own criteria for admission so different universities demand different bands. IELTS is not connected with any of them.

Myth No. 5: In speaking, I’ll lose marks if I don’t understand the question once

Truth: No, you will not lose marks here. Speaking test is just to test your speaking skills not listening. If you will not be able to understand the question, you can ask the examiner to repeat it. Otherwise, you won’t answer it properly that can further lose your marks. You can even ask the meaning of any word, if you do not understand.

Myth No. 6: I can grab more marks if I take test in my own country

Truth: You may get more marks when you take test in your own country because of the reason that you may feel more comfortable while attempting the paper in your home town. But some people think that they cannot score good marks out of their country. They do not understand the fact that the IELTS test is same everywhere and it takes place on the same day. It has nothing to do with the place or country. It will test your English level and you are same all the time. Teachers are well trained to give you scores on the basis of your performance so your scores will not get affected. If you are more comfortable at your home place then you can score better but paper will be similar.

Myth No. 7: If examiner is looking at the clock during your speaking test, then you are boring

Truth: The examiner is not looking at the clock because you are boring. Instead he/she has to follow the strict instruction for the time limit. They just keep looking on the clock so as to manage the time properly. You should also learn The Right Way To Move Your Mouth When Speaking English.

Myth No.8: There are some specific questions at the specific time of the year

Truth: I perceived this myth few months back. According to some students there are certain questions that are covered in IELTS exam during May or June. But this is totally amiss. IELTS is very intelligent and it has lots of questions to ask.

You just prepare to give your best, you will succeed for sure.
