What is Coherence?
Coherence means the logical and structural composition of words, sentences and paragraphs. Coherence is used to connect ideas within each sentence and paragraph for others to understand exactly what is being conveyed. If your report, letter or essay lacks coherence, the examiner deducts marks as he/she is unable to grasp what is being expressed. Coherence as a whole evaluates the assembling of ideas and data present.

What is Cohesion?
Cohesion means linking of ideas through connectors, linking words or phrases. It focuses more on the grammatical side of the associating two separate sentences. Cohesion makes your written material more systematic and presentable. Cohesion directly tells the relationship between two sentences i.e. how they’re truly related. Words that can be used for good cohesion are linking words, transition words, synonyms and antonyms, different phrases.
Coherence And Cohesion In IELTS Writing
Be it Task 1 or 2, they all require valid points, their explanations and then most likely conclusion. Conclusion may not be as vital in Task 1, but it is definitely required in Task 2. So all this needs to be done in a proper structured format. Each para must convey one idea wherein sentences are connected to each other using linking words or transition words. Therefore, Coherence and Cohesion are really important to enhance quality of your answer.
