Listening is one of the 4 sections in Ielts which demands an equivalent attention as others do. Students do not prepare themselves to the full extent in this section as they feel that it can not be prepared. But conventional arrangement can help them to score high bands. - Improve your general listening skills: Most of the students feel enough satisfied by exercising old papers. Practicing old tests or sample papers can just help you to get familiar with the test pattern. But this will not help you to improve your scores. Start listening to everything, you can, including radio, news, english movies or internet audios.

- Listen the topic of the conversation carefully: Before each part of the test you will be instructed by someone saying “You will hear a conversation between..” or “You’ll hear a lecture on..” etc. This makes your work easier as you can get some idea about the conversation you are going to hear.
- Time management is necessary: Time management is very important while performing your test. So be quick while reading and answering to the questions.
- Check your answers: There is 30 minutes time gap between two sections so before jumping to the next, check your previous answers, verb form and spellings in a glimpse.
- Prepare in advance for section 3: Most of the time, you will find section 3 carrying a conversation between the student and the teacher. So you can work on all the possible conversations to get an approximate idea and score well in the test.
- Prepare for Section 4: Section 4 will present you a lecture on some topic that would be followed by multiple choice questions. You may need to read more in this section so you have to follow quick reading.
- Attempt “not sure” answers at the end: If you ever feel doubtful about any answer, just leave it and move forward to attempt that at last.
- Shift answers carefully to the answer sheet: Be cautious while shifting your answers from question paper to answer sheet. Sometimes, students lose marks while this copying, as they feel shortage of time. So manage your time well to avoid last minute stress.
- Make guess, if don’t know the answer: Don’t leave anything blank while reading and listening. Just make a guess as your guess can be right which gives you mark.
Some other important points to consider while attempting listening section:
- Inform the staff member immediately, if you can not hear the audio clearly.
- Listen to the instructions carefully (They can be different from your sample tests).
- Be specific while listening,focus on the main keywords.
- Concentration is must. Try to assume what a speaker can say ahead.
- Do not get panic if you could not listen to any word, it may not be useful.
- Do not waste too much time on any question, just guess if you have a bit idea.
- Be accurate in your spellings and grammar.
- Do not rush if you do not get any idea about the topic. Wait and try to tune in.
- You need to be very fast as read, write and listening is to be performed simultaneously.
- Pay attention to the words limitation.
