COMMON IELTS MISCONCEPTIONS THAT RESULT IN LOW BAND SCORE

The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is a famous English Proficiency Test that is taken by over 3 million students each year in order to get into reputed graduate as well as postgraduate schools abroad. This test uses 9 band scale to test the proficiency of non- native English Speakers. Moreover, it comprises of four modules that the student is evaluated upon, namely: Listening, Writing, Reading and Speaking.

In simple words, anybody who can efficiently speak, read or write in English Language can easily get a good band score in IELTS test.

But, sometimes even those who are proficient in English are unable to get a good band score in IELTS and it’s not because the test is difficult but rather there are various IELTS Misconceptions that stop people from getting good band score. So, let’s discuss them in detail:

IELTS MYTH 1: There is only one correct answer in the Speaking Module

Many IELTS Aspirants do think that when they are evaluated in the Speaking Module, they ought to give a correct answer. But, what they don’t understand is that their answer doesn’t matter, what matters is their fluency, grammatical accuracy, and pronunciation. As a matter of fact, the examiner is there to judge you for your English Language Skills, not your answer.

IELTS MYTH 2: Your opinion should match with your examiner in either Speaking or Writing Module

As discussed above, this is purely an English Proficiency Test so it’s quite obvious that nobody will judge you for your opinion. Moreover, Speaking and Writing Modules are just ways to test your English Skills. So, you don’t need to worry examiner’s opinion as he/she could personally disagree with your opinion but at the same time, you could still get a 9 band score!

IELTS MYTH 3: Difficulty of IELTS Test depends upon the Testing Center

This is indeed the biggest myth about taking IELTS Test. So, no matter which Testing Center you are taking your exam in, you have the exact same chances to get a high band score.

IELTS MYTH 4: Some examiners are more generous than the others

There is nothing like this, students generally complaint about their examiners being little rude but what they don’t understand is that the examiner is not there to be friends with you. The examiner’s sole purpose there is to judge you for your English proficiency Skills. And, they are just simply doing their job!

IELTS MYTH 5: You need to learn complex words to score better in Writing Module

There is no hard and fast rule to use complex words because there is a possibility that in order to insert new complex word that you probably learned days before the examination, you could mess up the whole meaning of the sentence and that is when your marks get deducted. So, it’s better to insert a word only when you are sure of its usage.

IELTS Myth 6: You can’t ask your examiner to repeat the question

Without hesitation, you can completely ask your examiner to repeat the question as its completely acceptable to do so. But yes! Do not misuse this privilege!

IELTS Myth 7: You need to have an American or a British Accent in order to score well in Speaking Module

You don’t have to have an American or British Accent to score better as it is been observed that students even score 9 bands with their native language accent. The only thing that matters is that you should clearly be able to express your thoughts in front of the examiner.

So, basically, these IELTS Misconceptions are self-made and self-acclaimed myths that should never be considered while preparing or taking the IELTS test as they will only result in a bad IELTS Score. So, don’t let these myths take over your mind, prepare well and just rock the examination!
